Why Does My GERD Get Worse at Night — and What Sleeping Position Actually Helps?

The first time I woke up with acid burning the back of my throat, I thought I was choking. Acupuncture at points such as ST36 (Zusanli) and PC6 (Neiguan) has also been investigated, with some evidence of benefit for heartburn and regurgitation. It should be noted that the quality of much TCM research is limited by small sample sizes, heterogeneous diagnostic criteria, and difficulty standardizing individualized herbal prescriptions, so these findings should be interpreted with appropriate caution.

Ayurveda

Ayurveda classifies reflux as "Amlapitta," a condition of excess sourness and heat in the gastrointestinal tract. The approach typically involves cooling herbs such as amla (Indian gooseberry) and licorice root, dietary modifications that favor sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes while minimizing sour, salty, and pungent foods, and lifestyle practices that reduce heat — including going to bed before 10 p.m., since late nights are thought to aggravate Pitta. Some traditional preparations like Yashtimadhu (licorice) have shown mucosal-protective properties in experimental studies (Saxena, 2005). It should be noted that most Ayurvedic evidence for reflux is traditional and observational rather than derived from modern randomized controlled trials, and that licorice in particular can raise blood pressure in susceptible individuals, so it should not be used without professional guidance.

Mind-body / Stress physiology
